Will I be starving myself?
You will not be starving yourself during your time with Byron Bay Detox Retreats, as your body will be nourished by our menu of organic, cold-pressed vegetable juices, mineral broths and high-density vitamin and mineral supplements.
You will likely achieve more health benefits from a week of liquid fasting than you would from a month of eating. You will feel a dramatic increase in vitality from this “live liquid gold”.
Fasting is not starvation. Fasting is the period of time when you ingest no food but live off the non-essential material reserve inside your body. Starvation would begin when all non-essential reserve material has been used up, and the body begins to break down and burn essential tissues for energy.
Will I be hungry?
Many fear being hungry during a fast, but actually little hunger is experienced. Your body is supported nutritionally and some of the supplements contain a high fibre content that may produce a feeling of satiety.
After two days of detoxification by liquid fasting, it is usual for no hunger to be experienced at all. Indeed, after five days, you may want to continue fasting as you will feel light, refreshed, spiritually high and will probably have very little interest in food.
Is there much scientific research on the benefits of fasting?
Over the last century, a tremendous amount of research has been done on the ancient practice of fasting. Many papers have been published in scientific journals such as The Journal of International Biochemistry, CMAJ – Canadian Medical Association Journal and Pubmed journals that explain the benefits and biochemistry, physiology, and metabolism of fasting.
In particular, a team of scientists led by Professor Volter Longo at the University of Southern California has proven that fasting replenish white blood cells and restore functional wellbeing to our immune systems.
“There is no evidence at all that fasting would be dangerous while there is strong evidence that it is beneficial,” Professor Longo said.
During a fast, our bodies not only use glucose and fat stores to expel toxins, but also break down white blood cells damaged (that are our friends in fighting disease) by unloading useless, tired and old ones to save energy.
Fasting can be particularly beneficial for those with damaged immune systems, studies have found.

Why do so many people say that fasting is not safe?
Food means love, comfort and security to most people and many object emotionally from going without food for a period of time.
It has recently been proven by Dr Kevin Hall and Dr Jason Fung in the book “Comparative physiology of fasting, starvation and food limitation” that your body will mainly burn fat and spare its protein reserves during a fast. In fasting the body uses excess carbohydrate stores (sugars) for the first 24 – 48hrs then starts to use fat as energy.
It is safe to fast, except if you suffer from Type 1 diabetes – or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, as this would expose the foetus or newborn baby to the toxins expelled from the your body while fasting.

Why can’t I just do a juice fast at home?
Fasts should only be conducted under the supervision of a qualified health practitioner.
It’s also recommended that you remove yourself from your usual environment to avoid temptation and distractions and allow yourself to truly relax and let go in a supportive and nurturing environment.
How much weight will I lose?
The short answer to this is: you can quickly lose a lot of weight if you have a lot to lose.
Most people lose anything from three to six kilos in a week of fasting on organic vegetable juice. If you follow our pre-cleanse program before arriving, up to another three kilos would normally be shed. People with a weight issue may lose up to 10 kilos within a month. Our program is a very safe and effective way to lose weight.

What about my need for protein?
New cell growth during fasting is stimulated and accelerated as the required proteins are re-synthesised from decomposed cells (this is called autolysis). Thus, your serum albumin reading – blood-protein level – remains constant and normal throughout your fast, as your body uses protein and other stored nutrients where needed.
The late Otto Buchinger M.D., from Germany, who supervised over 100,000 juice fasts, sums it up as, “The need for protein diminishes during the fast, until in the second week, it has been reduced from 100 grams to 15-20 grams a day and this amount is, in fact, quite sufficient while fasting.”
What is a pre-cleanse?
A pre-cleanse is the recommended diet to follow at least 3 days and up to 3 weeks before arrival. This allows the body to prepare by gently beginning the cleansing process. It aids in the transition to detoxification and minimises any side effects of the fast.
Are there any side effects to the detox program?
Some people may go through a fast with no side effects at all.
But, during a fast your body will release built-up toxins and poisons, which may create some discomfort. These may manifest as headaches, nausea, fatigue or body aches and pains. The symptoms usually only last for half a day and pass quickly.
These common cleansing symptoms are a good sign that the program is working, as your body is in the process of releasing harmful toxins. Most often people experience these symptoms on day three, when toxicity is at its highest and the liver is detoxifying.
Colonic hydrotherapy is the most rapid way to eliminate these toxins and greatly reduces most side effects.

Why is colonic cleansing important?
